Proudwords 2002 ProudWORDS initiative has young gay men writing for their lives. Young gay men are being offered the chance to work with a creative writer for two weeks with a view to involving them in writing classes with older gay men and lesbians. ProudWORDS, the organisation set up to develop the literary talents of the gay community, is organising the initiative along with Mesmac NorthEast. Now in its fourth year of operation proudWORDS has attracted high calibre writers to the region including Jackie Kay, Stella Duffy, Val McDermid, Jake Arnott and Paul Magrs. Development worker for proudWORDS, Mary Lowe said 'Up until now we've organised events that have attracted large numbers of people in their late twenties, thirties or forties. We felt it was time to make our events more accessible for younger gay people. At school or college, it might be impossible for gay people to write about their experience of the world. We wanted to provide a safe space for them to be able to do that.' And if they're inspired to do more, proudWORDS has organised a range of open workshops and events from October onwards that will suit all tastes in reading and writing. There will be workshops for beginners, sessions using music to inspire writing, a session on how to write and deliver performance poetry and a session on writing credible characters.
