A Boy's Own Story by Edmund White
If for nothing else, read this book for the beauty of its writing. The story ought to fall into the coming-of-age category, yet even here it is better than the average. It is told with poignancy, humour and not over the top. But the style takes this book into great modern literature. How often can a damned good read also be so well written.

Brain and Body by Richard Frost. List Price:£7.99
Synopsis: Jip's world is shattered after an horrific attack in a public toilet leaves the 17 year-old unable to remember events or even recognise his own family. Then in a local gym he meets beautiful, androgynous Kasper who takes him under his wing. But Jip's attacker is still at large.

Amazon review: Brain and Body is a dark, disturbing first novel by the Netherlands-based novelist Richard Frost. Set in Groningen in Holland, it opens with the brutal attack in a public toilet on Jip, a bright 17-year-old gay schoolboy, the night before he plans to come out to his parents. "Ever since he hasn't been able to put two and two together. He doesn't know what happened to him, let alone how it happened. All he knows is that when he came round, things seemed seriously out of order. Which they definitely were. Broken body, broken brain." Virtually abandoned by his family, Jip is adopted by a gay household held together by "mother goose", Kasper, "a she-male, so beautifully so that he could pass for the prefix only". Kasper gives Jip a routine to make some sense of his shattered short-term memory, including "gay swimming" and bodybuilding. However, when Jip meets Axl at the local gym, things start to go wrong, as history starts to repeat itself with shocking results. Brain and Body is a sparely written but emotionally demanding novel, with its harrowing portrait of Jip's impotent frustration at the loss of his short-term memory, and its devastating portrayal of the monstrous, closeted, pill-popping world of Axl. Frost's amusing account of gay Dutch life centred on the beautiful and wise Kasper is deftly done, but this is ultimately an extremely angry denunciation of homophobia and sexual hypocrisy in an apparently liberal community. Breakfast with Scot by Michael Downing. List Price:£9.99
A gay couple faces sudden parenthood and the embarrassing truth about their own definitions of "normal" in this novel. Sam and Ed are living the good life: happy, healthy, devoted to each other and their careers, they have no yearning for the joyful mysteries of parenthood. But when eleven-year-old Scot's mother suddenly dies, the couple is determined to make good on a wine-soaked promise made years before. They hang a tire swing in the back yard and call the neighborhood school to arrange enrollment. Scot arrives just in time to start fifth grade - with a pair of lacy white socks in his duffel bag. With wry dialogue, frothy characters, and an offbeat plot, Michael Downing's mastery reaches new heights of brilliance in Breakfast with Scot.
